A total of 29 runs in two games for the Pierre Governors would help the Govs get two wins over the Aberdeen Smittys on the road on Thursday as the Govs have now won six straight winning 15-11 and 14-9.
Aydan Johnson would get everything going for the Govs as he would hit a bases clearing triple in the top of the second to put the Govs up 3-0 in the second and Pierre never trailed in the first game although the Smittys made it tight tying the game at 5-5 in the fourth and then 10-9 after six, but the Govs always had the answer to take the lead back or extend the lead farther out. Brecken Fuhrman, Bridger Babcock and Hudson Shaffer each had two RBIs while Trip Lindekugel went 3-3 with a double in the win. Carter Templeton got the win on the mound going an inning and two thirds of relief allowing four runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Aberdeen had seven errors in the ballgame.
Aberdeen again had seven errors in game two, but led 3-1 after the first, but Pierre responded with a five running inning and then after being tied 6-6 after four, Pierre put up a six spot in the top of the fifth and got some insurance in the sixth and seventh innings. Sutton Sonnenschein and Will Eilers each had a triple while Jackson Goodman, Sonnenschein and Parker O’Bryan each had two RBIs. The Govs used three pitchers with Maddox Dokken getting the win in relief in his first varsity appearance allowing five runs, one earned on four hits with a walk and eight strikeouts in three and two thirds innings. Bridger Babcock got the final seven outs allowing just one hit with one walk and a strikeout.
The Govs improve to 8-4 on the season and 6-4 in South Dakota games. The Govs will now play on Sunday after Friday’s doubleheader is postponed and move to Sunday. Pierre hosts Brookings in the home opener with coverage beginning at 1:45 with a 2:00 first pitch on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Blake Dean on the call.
