The Muskegon Lumberjacks are on to the USHL conference semifinals as the Lumberjacks would sweep the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders this weekend winning 3-2 and 5-2.
Pierre native and captain of Muskegon, Carter Sanderson would score the tying goal in Friday’s 3-2 win as he would pick up his lone point of the weekend on a mad scramble play that eventually went back to the point and a shot redirected by Sanderson in front of the net to get the Lumberjacks tied at 2-2 late in the second period. The Lumberjacks, the five seed in the Eastern Conference, went down 1-0 in each of the tough games before either making it tied or taking the lead after two periods. Two empty net goals on Saturday sealed the series win as the defending USHL champions advance to face the top seed in the Eastern Conference in the Dubuque Fighting Saints, the same team they played in the Eastern Conference Semifinals last year. Muskegon went 1-3 on the power play in the two games and outshot the RoughRiders in both contests.
Muskegon will head to Dubuque, Iowa to play games 1 and 2 on Friday and Saturday this coming weekend April 17-18. The series will shift to Muskegon on Friday, April 24 and April 25. Game five would be on April 28 back in Dubuque if the best of five series goes to the final game.
