PIERRE, (KCCR) — A South Dakota State Trooper has been selected as a finalist for an international honor recognizing exceptional bravery, professionalism and service by state and provincial officers. Trooper Kyle Knievel is one of four finalists for the International Association of Chiefs of Police/Motorola Solutions Trooper of the Year. Knievel was nominated for the award due to his actions on August 5th of last year during a high-risk pursuit into Haakon County. The pursuit became a life-threatening situation when 31 year-old Shace Looking Horse took a hostage at gunpoint 13 miles east of Philip and shot at responding officers. Knievel shot and killed Looking Horse, saving the hostage in the process. The hostage was not injured during the ordeal. Governor Larry Rhoden says Knievelās actions reflect the highest standards of service and courage and that his quick decision making under extreme circumstances saved lives. The winner of the Trooper of the Year award will be announced next week on March 12th.
