The Track and Field State Championships concluded in Sioux Falls over the weekend as the three day event ends, area athletes represented well.
Pierre
For the Pierre Governors on Friday Maya Shorter and Hannah Lemeiux both placed finishing second and third in the discus throw. Shorter also placed sixth in the javelin throw. Jared Lutmer placed fourth in the 3200 meter run and Canyon Jones took fifth place in the pole vault. On Saturday, Jack Merkwan came in fourth place in the 300 meter hurdles while Tucker Putzier had a fifth place finish in the 200 meter dash and sixth place finish in the 100 meter dash and Aaron Campbell was seventh in the javelin throw. Overall the Governors were 14th in both the boys and girls final standings.
Sully Buttes
The Sully Buttes Chargers had several athletes on the podium on both Friday and Saturday as Lydia Hill placed third in the discus throw, Griffin Peterson was sixth in the 800 meter run and Jesse Schall was ninth in the shot put on Friday. Saturday, Stevie Wittler and Olivia Olson stood on the podium a couple of times as Wittler finished seventh in the 100 meter hurdles. Wittler was also part of the 4×100 relay team with Tahnie Yellowhawk, Olson and Courtnie Weinheimer placing seventh. Olson was also seventh in the 300 meter hurdles.
Stanley County
For the Stanley County Buffaloes, Cormac Duffy had a 12th place finish in the triple jump on Friday to finish out his career.
Lyman
Skyler Volmer finished her track and field championships with plenty of podium visits for the Lyman Raiders placing second in the 100 meter hurdles, third in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump, TJ Moran was 10th in the shot put throw and also fourth in the discus.
Jones County
The Jones County Coyotes would see the 4×200 relay team place eighth at the championships. The team consisted of Alexis Moran, Madelyn Host, Emma Hunt and Kendal Kinsley. Host and Kinsley teamed up with Mallory Valburg and Jolie Dugan to place seventh in the sprint medley relay race.
Potter County
The Potter County Battlers collected a state championship as the team of Kristie Lake, Rayel Persoon, Emma Schlachter and Dannika Kaup won the 4×400 relay race on Saturday. Schlachter was also third in the 800 meter run, Kaup third in the 400 meter dash and Makaivry Schatz was fourth in the shot put. Nicholas Schlachter took home fourth place in the 3200 meter run and sixth in the 1600 meter run. Carter Luikens was sixth in the 400 meter dash. The sprint medley relay team of Kaup, Schatz, Lake and Schlachter placed third for the Battlers. As a team, the Potter County girls placed third with 39 points.
Miller
For the Miller Rustlers, Noah Johnson was third in the shot put throw, Alex Schumacher was fifth in the 1600 meter run and Pierce Baumberger was seventh in the 3200 meter run. The 4×100 relay team of Tyra Gates, Ally Mullaney, Morgan Kolda and Jaden Werdel placed third while Gates along with Jaden, Paige and Gracen Werdel placed sixth in the 4×400 race. Caden Gortmaker also was fifth in the shot put throw for the Rustlers.
Highmore-Harrold
Autumn Fallis had a strong showing at the championships placing third in the 3200 meter hurdles while also placing fifth in the 1600 meter run. Grady Aasby was fourth in the 400 meters for the Highmore-Harrold Pirates
