Recent Snow Makes Small Dent In Drought

PIERRE — Recent heavy wet snow is slowly moving the U-S Drought Monitor in South Dakota in areas that got precipitation. Severe drought conditions that extended from southwest Stanley County to Fall River County have been bumped down one level to D-1 Moderate drought. Locally, Moderate drought is depicted in most of Jackson, Jones, Lyman, southern Haakon and Sully, eastern and southwestern Stanley and all of Hughes, Hyde, Hand, Buffalo and Brule Counties. Severe drought is still being seen in most of Sully, northern Haakon, central Stanley and all of Potter, Ziebach and Dewey Counties. Small areas of southern Jones and Lyman County along with Mellette and Tripp Counties are listed as abnormally dry. Extreme drought has been removed from southeast sections of South Dakota.
