Division Of Criminal Investigation Looking Into Apparent Inmate Suicide At State Women’s Prison

PIERRE — The South Dakota Department of Corrections says an inmate at the South Dakota Women’s Prison in Pierre has died as the result of an apparent suicide. The 32 year-old inmate was found unresponsive in a bathroom at the prison on Tuesday March 16th. The inmate was transported to Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre where she was pronounced dead. The inmate was serving multiple sentences for unauthorized ingestion of a controlled substance from both Codington and Brookings County. She was also serving a Minnehaha County sentence for possession of a controlled substance. The inmates death is being investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.
