The Sully Buttes Charger boys basketball team couldn’t overcome pressure defense by the Lower Brule Sioux, and dropped a 55-50 decision Saturday afternoon at the Warner Classic in Warner.
The Sioux put back court pressure on the Chargers, and pressed them into the front court. Turnovers and throwaways by the Chargers had the Sioux leading 25-23 at the half, and 41-33 after three quarters.
Despite the pressure, the Chargers found a way to get to the hoop and kept it close. Seniors Garrett Petersen—with 13, Caleb Chicoine and Rafe Wientjes with 12 points apiece. The Chargers got to 53-50 late in the fourth, and had to foul to stop the clock. The Sioux hit their last two free throws, and sealed the victory.
Sully Buttes now slips to 8-11, with one game left on the regular season. That will be at home against North Central. Lower Brule—ranked second in Region 2B, ups its’ record to 10-7 going into the final week of regular season play.
