Oahe Capitals Sweep Three Game Weekend, Take First Place in State Standings

The Oahe Capitals trailed 3-0 late in the first period against the Aberdeen Cougars on Friday but quickly turned into a 4-3 lead in the second and never trailed again the rest of the weekend as they beat the Cougars 7-3 and swept the Sioux Center Storm, 3-2 in overtime on Saturday and 8-0 on Sunday.

A couple of unfortunate breaks went to Aberdeen in the first period on Friday night as they jumped out to the 3-0 lead. Andy Gordon started the comeback as Elliot Leif finished with a hat trick and the top line of Gordon, Leif and Briggs scored all seven goals in the win.

Saturday the Caps and Storm had to go to overtime to settle the score but it was the Caps who got the job done as Ashton Griese fed Dre Berndt in front of the net to tap it in the 3-2 win. Kieran Duffy picked up the win in the lone start of the weekend as he and Blake Cannegaiter stood on their heads throughout the night.

The Capitals were able to find the back of the net much easier on Sunday as Leif scored his second hat trick of the weekend along with Gordon scoring twice and Briggs adding a goal in the 8-0 shutout as Schulz finished 21 saves on the evening. Steele says it was fun watching both goalies play at high level capping off the weekend with the shutout…

Steele says it’s nice to be a top the standings right now but there’s more games left…

And Steele says both games between Rushmore and Brookings will pay dividends next weekend…

The Capitals will face Rushmore on Saturday in Rapid City with puck drop at 7:00 Central Time and Brookings at home at 5:00 on Sunday. Both games will be on Capital City Rock, capitalcityrock.com and on YouTube at Capital City Rock Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
