The South Dakota State Jackrabbits would hold off a vigorous comeback attempt by the South Dakota Coyotes to win the rivalry game Saturday evening 31-21 in Brookings.
SDSU looked to be running away with the game leading 21-0 at the half and 28-0 after the third quarter as the Coyotes had no answers offensively and defensively as the Jacks had four different players score including two touchdown passes from quarterback Chase Mason. Jack Smith and Braedon Delahoyde each caught a touchdown pass while James Basinger and Josiah Johnson each ran in a score. But the Coyotes didn’t go down without a fight. Austyn Modrzewski would throw three touchdown passes to three different receivers and with two minutes to go in the game, USD pulled within seven at 28-21. However, SDSU would get a couple of big plays forcing the Coyotes to use their timeouts and not get the ball back until a field goal with 19 seconds remaining giving the Jacks its 10 point cushion to hold on for the win.
Both QBs were exceptional in the game as Mason had 232 yards on 16-26 with two touchdowns and no interceptions while Modrzewski would be 21-27 for 233 yards and three touchdowns. USD had just 62 yards of offense in the first half. Johnson had 126 yards on the ground as SDSU outrushed USD 227-19.
The win pushes South Dakota State to 7-2 and 4-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference while South Dakota falls to 7-3 and 4-2 in conference play. SDSU will travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to face Northern Iowa next Saturday while USD has a bye week and will return on Saturday November, 14 to face Northern Iowa at home.
