(Onida, SD) – Sully Buttes season came to a close Thursday night after falling 28-22 against Bennett County at home. The Chargers finished the season 8-2.
Sully Buttes struck the end zone first after Bretton Barber crossed the goal line in the first quarter. Bennett County responded on their opening drive as well with Maddux Rissue connecting with Isaias Mesteth from 18 yards out and after a successful two-point try, the Warriors led 8-6 in the second.
The Chargers were the first-half team. They added two more touchdowns. Easton Moore would find Bryson LaRauch on a wide open 22 yard touchdown pass to give Sully Buttes the lead back at 14-8. The Chargers would add one more score before the half adding a one play drive on a 37 yard scamper by Barber to give the Chargers a 22-8 lead at the half.
The script flipped in the second half. The third quarter didn’t see either team do much with the football. Fumbles and fourth down stops were the story of the third. Bennett County wasn’t out of the game yet.
After a Sully Buttes fumble, the Warriors would add a four yard touchdown pass Rissue to Kade Harris from four yards out and a failed two point try cutting the score at 22-14. The Chargers failed a fourth down and Bennett County cut the lead to within 2 on a two play drive capped off by a 28 yard touchdown pass from Rissue to Mesteth for the second time of the game. Rissue and Mesteth would connect for a third time in the fourth with 5:41 left in the game with it being the game’s final touchdown. Sully Buttes couldn’t generate the magic they have been a custom to this season with the game ending on a game sealing interception from Moore.
Sully Buttes in their first season back in 9A finished 8-2 as the fourth best team in the regular season. The Chargers will return a lot of skill position players next season.
