For the second straight game, the Pierre Governor girls soccer team would grab a PK victory, this time over the O’Gorman Lady Knights to advance to the state championship.
Also for the second straight game, it would be a 100 minute scoreless tie as the Governor defense suffocated the O’Gorman offense, but the Knights offense reciprocated the feeling. After both teams had two shots in the first half, O’Gorman would outshoot the Governors 9-3 in the second half but Emlyn Swanson would make six saves through the first 80 minutes. Swanson had to make one more save in the final 20 minutes of overtime and finished with seven overall. O’Gorman would again outshoot Pierre in overtime 3-2.
In penalty kicks, Pierre would shoot second as Lyndy Bortnem would score first for OG. Cameron Larson would tie it back up at one before Hannah Heineman would miss the net. However, Josephine Wurtz would be stopped keeping it 1-1. In the third shot, Loretta Hillman would beat Swanson and Ivy Flottmeyer would be stopped by Brinley Groos and O’Gorman led 2-1. Megan Mausbach would miss high keeping the door open for Pierre as Myah Fravel would score to tie it at 2-2. Groos would take the fifth shoot scoring to go up 3-2, but Lexie Hillmer would keep the season alive to tie it 3-3 after five shooters. Moving into the sixth shot, Swanson would make the save on Ally Steffen giving Katelynn Taylor the chance to win it. Taylor’s shot would go through sending the Governors to the state championship game for the first time since 2018.
Pierre is now 14-1-1 on the season and will face Harrisburg on Saturday in the AA state championship. Coverage will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
