The Pierre Governor girls soccer team would grind out a win in penalty kicks over the Brookings Bobcats on Saturday to advance after 0-0 draw and winning 4-2 in PKs advancing to Tuesday’s state semifinal.
The Governors would outshoot the Bobcats in the first half but Emlyn Swanson had to make one more save than Ramsie Hinricher. But in the second half, the Bobcats would pick up the offensive pace and outshoot the Govs 11-7 through eighty scoreless minutes. In overtime, Swanson made two more key saves to grab seven on the evening for the shutout and neither team could find the back of the net sending the game into penalty kicks. In PKs, Brookings would shoot first with Lexi Erp and Josie Hegerfeld scoring. The Governors would answer with Cameron Larson and Josephine Wurtz making it 2-2 through two shots. In the third round, Abbi Popinga would shoot high over the crossbar opening the door for the Governors. Ivy Flottmeyer would score to make it 3-2 and then Swanson, diving to her left would make the save on Rylee Briggs shot sending Myah Fravel to the line to try and win it for the Govs. Fravel would finish the night off going 4-4 in PKs sending the top seeded Governors to the state semifinal where they will host the O’Gorman Lady Knights on Tuesday.
Pierre improves to 13-1-1 and after O’Gorman upset Aberdeen Central 3-0, the fifth seed Lady Knights will be home on Tuesday. As of this writing, the game time is still to be determined but the game will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
