(Onida, SD) – In a opportunity to earn 51 seed points in a win in a battle of two undefeated team in class 9A, it was the Chargers who would suffer their first loss of the season against Timber Lake 44-36 in overtime. Sully Buttes concludes the regular season next Friday in Lemmon.
Timber Lake punched into the end zone first and did it twice in a row in the first quarter. The Panthers scored first on an eight yard touchdown pass from Pete Maher to Broc Bauer to see the games first touchdown of the night. Timber Lake added another score after the Chargers went three and out on their opening series of the game. The Panthers on a fourth and 16 would score to take an early 16-0 led. Sully Buttes would score with just 43 seconds left in the first quarter when Easton Moore connected with Bryson LaRosh to make it 16-8 after a successful two-point try.
In the second twelve minutes, the Panthers responded on the Chargers’ touchdown drive on a fourth and long play again. This time it was Kanton Hunt who threw a 30 yard touchdown pass to Owen Schweitzer to go up 24-8 over Sully Buttes. The Chargers responded again with a Moore one-yard quarterback keeper to bring it to within 24-14. Sully Buttes got the ball back to end the half down two after the Moore and Hudson Barber connection would occur with seven seconds left in the first half and trail 24-22 at the halftime break.
The last drive of the first and the first drive of the second half was all Sully Buttes. The Chargers took their first lead of the night after Moore threw to LaRosh for a second time give the Chargers a 30-24 lead. However, Timber Lake would tie things up on a 27 yard passing touchdown from Hunt to Braden Lawrence to tie things up at 30.
The fourth quarter was a punt fest until the end when the Charger were moving late in the fourth but a late fumble by Zach Weinheimer was picked up by Maher going all the way for the score giving the Panthers a 36-30 lead with two minutes left. Sully Buttes responded, the duo of Moore and Barber would connect on a 64 yard passing touchdown to tie the game. After the failed two point try was 36-36. Timber Lake still had time, but on fourth and goal with seconds left an incomplete pass would send the game to overtime tied at 36.
Timber Lake would be the only team to hit pay dirt and have a successful two point try. The Chargers failed a fourth and goal from the 10 and the seven game win streak at home came to a close with a final of 44-36.
