Over the next two days, Monday and Tuesday, the Pierre Governor golf team will be in Aberdeen to play in the Class AA state golf tournament as the Govs head in playing some of its best golf of the season.
The Governors have inched closer throughout the season to some of the top teams in the state which included being only five shots back of the ESD title last week Monday in Brookings. Today, the Govs start the two day journey looking for a high placement and stay in contention to make Tuesday a potential big day. The Governor six will be Caleb Hutton, Matthew Eberhard, Rigley Kulesa, Beckham McPeck, Tate Stoeser and Hudson Prunty. Hutton has led the Govs in scoring the most of the course of the season as he and McPeck gained All-ESD honors last Monday.
Lee Park is the home of this year’s state tournament. The Govs played at the course back on September 1 and finished in tenth as a team, 12 shots back of Lincoln for the team win as Eberhard would lead Pierre that day with a two over par, in tenth place. Hutton, who shot five over par and in 31st place says going into the state tournament, they need to understand how tight some of the holes are at Lee Park and to play a smart game..
Tiffany Benham, head coach of the Pierre Governors has seen this team continue to mature to get better and they understand the team needs to have four scorers in the 70s…
The two day tournament can have a big swing from a good score to a bad score and vice versa and you can’t have just one good day to compete for a state title and all-state honors and Benham says focus is a key part of it…
Benham says the other key is to play smart and safe…
