PIERRE, (KCCR) — The name of a woman killed in a vehicle/pedestrian crash in Mellette County has been released by the South Dakota Highway Patrol. The crash that killed 23 year-old Nikki Thin Elk of Rapid City happened Wednesday, September 23 just before nine-pm on U-S Highway 83 inside White River city limits. The preliminary crash investigation shows Thin Elk was walking south on Highway 83 in the middle of the road while a 2016 Dodge Ram 35-hundred was also traveling south at the same time. The truck driven by 37 year-old Julio Ernesto Alonso Torres. The Grand Island, Nebraska man attempted to slow his vehicle, which was pulling a trailer, and swerved to try and avoid Thin Elk. Thin Elk was transported to a hospital in Rosebud where she passed away the next day. The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
