The Pierre Governor soccer teams are finishing up the regular season today as the Governors travel to Harrisburg with a lot of playoff implications on the line.
The Governor girls will play first and its a battle of the top two teams in the state. A win for the Govs will put them into the number one spot heading into the playoffs as they sit at 11-1 currently. Harrisburg is unbeaten, but not undefeated as they are 12-0-1 with the lone tie to Yankton. Even without something crazy happening, the Governors should stay in the top two even with a loss meaning they will be guaranteed home field advantage throughout the playoffs leading up to the state title, as long as they keep winning. While Stevens and Aberdeen Central are sitting three and four, stat wise, both Pierre and Harrisburg have proven to be the top two teams in the state to this point and moving into the playoffs.
The Governor boys want to try and move up a spot or two if possible after tonight’s game against Harrisburg. The Governors, at 3-6-3, are in 15th place and will take on the 6-5-2 Tigers who are coming in tied for the ninth seed. However, even with a win, they will need help to get into the eighth spot to host a first round game. But, a loss will push them to 10th or lower depending on the rest of the finishes in the final games. Pierre dropped its last contest to Aberdeen Central 3-0 last Thursday. After today, the Governors will wait until next week Tuesday to play in the first round of the state playoffs.
Kick off of the girls game will be at 4:00 with the girls game to follow at Harrisburg High School.
