PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Pierre man was arrested Monday following a struggle with Pierre police. Captain Kyle Cummings says Central South Dakota Communications received a 9-1-1 call around 10:15 pm. One of the dispatchers heard a voice in the background saying the caller should not call 9-1-1 because they would be arrested. At that point the call disconnected and dispatchers could not re-established contact. Officers then responded to the 2300 block of East Franklin Avenue to further investigate. hey made contact outside the residence with both the caller and 21 year-old Nicholas Murphy. Police determined Murphy had a bench warrant out for his arrest. When officers informed Murphy of the warrant he attempted to flee. An officer caught up with Murphy and struggled to bring him to the ground. During the course of the struggle, Murphy allegedly struck the officer and grabbed to officers duty belt. Murphy was taken to the Hughes County Jail on charges including Obstruction, Simple Assault of a Law Enforcement Officer and Resisting Arrest along with the outstanding warrant.
