PIERRE, (KCCR) — A western Mellette County man has been sentenced on federal assault charges. U-S Attorney Ron Parsons says 32 year-old Chauncy Crow Dog of Norris was sentenced by U-S District Judge Eric Schulte to three years and a month in federal prison. Crow Dog was indicted by a federal grand jury in May of last year. He entered a guilty plea to the federal charge of Assault with a Dangerous Weapon in June of this year. Parsons says Crow Dog was involved in an assault at a residence in the Corn Creek Community on October 16 of 2024. Crow Dog had seen two men fighting outside the residence. He left the residence and picked up a shovel, the struck one of the men in the face with it. The strike broke the victim’s jaw. As a part of the sentence, Crow Dog was ordered to serve three years of supervised release after the prison term and pay a 100-dollar special assessment to the federal crime victim’s fund.
