PIERRE, (KCCR) — This week, the South Dakota Highway Patrol is working to increase public awareness and reinforce safe driving around school buses during a three-day School Bus Safety Outreach operation. The operation began Tuesday and will wrap up Thursday. During that time, troopers will work with school districts to watch bus routes and loading areas to make sure drivers are following school bus safety laws, like stopping for extended stop signs and red flashing lights on buses. Patrol vehicles will be in visible locations near school bus stops, loading areas and high-traffic routes where children interact with buses. Troopers will engage in a four-point approach including following select bus routes to watch driver behavior; positions patrol vehicles near bus stops for high visibility; conduct targeted safety operations to identify violators and encourage compliance and providing safety reminders and information to community members. Captain Jon Stahl says school bus safety is a shared responsibility and that school bus safety is meant to keep children safe.
