PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Fort Pierre couple is lending a hand to an effort to improve the Swine Barn at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron. Doctor Gary and Connie Grittner have donated 15-thousand dollars to the Hog Wild for a Better Barn Campaign. The campaign has an ultimate end goal of 240-thousand dollars. Among the proposed barn upgrades are 450 new hog pens that will make the Swine Barn safer, more comfortable and user-friendly for 4-H, F-F-A and Open Class exhibitors. A number of donations have previously been made to the effort. The South Dakota Soybean Checkoff has pledged 30-thousand dollars and matching challenges have been made by the South Dakota Pork Producers and State Fair Foundation. Grittner says he and his wife believe in investing in opportunities that help youth expand their knowledge and take pride in their work and adds the barn is a place where youth can do just that. A variety of donor levels are available through the campaign. Donors can also spread pledge payments out over a two-year period. All donations are tax deductible.
