(Onida, SD) – The Sully Buttes Chargers would not disappoint the home crowd in a packed home opener Friday night against the Lyman Raiders winning 42-34 and improving to 3-0 on the season going into their bye week.
Sully Buttes had multiple opportunity to put more points on the board, but failed in different occasions in the win. The Chargers who were set to play defense in the opening drive of the game would recover a kick from Lyman after it bounced off the crown of a helmet to set them up in great field position. However, a four and out allowed the Raiders to strike first on five yard touchdown run from Dawson Volmer to give Lyman a 6-0 lead. Sully Buttes tied it up in the first with a five yard run from an option pitch from Easton Moore to Bretton Barber to tie it up at 6-6 after the failed two point try.
The Chargers would take the lead in the second quarter after a fourth down punt snap from Lyman bounced out of the endzone for a safety making it 8-6 for Sully Buttes. It was the lead change that the Chargers would never relinquish. After a four and out for the Chargers, Lyman would two plays later would give Sully Buttes perfect field position and Moore would connect with Jace Heath from six yards out. The Chargers struggled with two point conversions most of the night and would stay 14-6. The Raiders closed the scoring in the first half with MJ Diehm running it from 14 yards out to cut the lead to within two at 14-12 going into the half.
Sully Buttes were not going to be stopped in the second half with the third quarter scoring getting started with a 33 yard touchdown pass from Moore to Hudson Barber making it 20-12. The Chargers would start the next drive in great field position courtesy of a 64 yard punt return from Hudson Barber and a 20 yard run from Bretton Barber to have the drive capped off by a one yard quarterback sneak from more. After a rare successful two point try, the Chargers led 28-12.
Lyman would break the third quarter goose egg on a 35 yard touchdown pass from Volmer to Jesse Bauer. Sully Buttes had a response; a 51 yard touchdown pass response in a two play drive to extend the lead to 34-18.
The defensive line for the Sully Buttes Chargers came up with an interception from Cooper Faulkenhagen returning it 30 yards giving the Chargers offense a short field to work with. Moore would cap of the scoring for Sully Buttes on the night with a 10 yard run into the endzone. The Raiders added one more score from Diehm three yards out cut the lead to 42-26 going into the fourth.
Sully Buttes would play keep away for most of the fourth quarter. Holding onto the football for over seven minute but no points would come out of the drive. Lyman scored with just over a minute to go in the fourth from Diehms third touchdown run of the night to give the Raiders a chance in the late fourth quarter. Sully Buttes would recover the onside kick and lined up in victory formation in front of the home fans winning 42-34.
Moore would go 18-28 passing for 251 yards and four total touchdowns in the win. Bretton Barber would have 12 carries for 51 yards, and Hudson Barber lead the receiving total with nine receptions for 89 yards.
The Chargers 3-0 will have their bye week coming up this week and will host Redfield the following week at home with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
