PIERRE, (KCCR) — President Donald Trump has granted a request by South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden for a Major Disaster Declaration for severe storms at the end of June and beginning of July. Public Assistance federal funding is now available to South Dakota, impacted Tribal government and local governments along with some nonprofit organizations on a cost sharing basis for emergency work and repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the storms that included 131 mile an hour winds that did significant damage to Highmore and straight-line wind and tornado damage across Beadle, Bennett, Buffalo, Day, Hand, Hyde, Hughes and Stanley Counties along with both the Crow Creek and Lower Brule Sioux Tribes. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has appointed Kenneth Williams the Third as the Federal Coordinating Officer for the storm recovery efforts in the impacted areas. Additional designations may be made down the road if requested by the state or warranted by results of further assessments.
