The Pierre Governor soccer teams are back on the pitch today continuing its long homestand as the Govs host the Mitchell Kernels in a boys and girls doubleheader.
The Governor girls will play first for the first time this year at home as the 4-0 undefeated Governors take on the 3-1 Kernels. While the two teams have combined for a 7-1 record, Pierre sits in fourth place currently while Mitchell is on the outside of a top eight spot sitting in ninth place as we near the halfway point of the regular season. The Govs have allowed just two goals so far this year and have back-to-back shutouts. Mitchell is coming in after its first loss of the season to Brookings 4-1. Mitchell has wins over Huron, Spearfish and Douglas/New Underwood. Pierre’s Cameron Larson had four goals in last game’s 10-0 win over Huron.
In the boys game, Pierre will be looking for its first win after tying the last two games. The Govs grabbed its first two goals of the season with Caiden Ahartz and Jacoby LaRoche both scoring as Ahartz gave the Govs an early lead while LaRoche tied it up late in the 2-2 draw with Huron. Pierre’s strength of schedule has the Govs over the Kernels in the standings currently even though Mitchell is 2-2. Pierre sits in 14th while the Kernels are 15th. Mitchell has beaten Huron and Douglas/New Underwood, but a loss to Spearfish and 9-1 loss to Brookings last time out. Pierre will look to jump out to an early lead again against Mitchell while also being able to add on to it.
The girls will play first this afternoon with kickoff at 4:00 and the boys game will follow at the PILC Fields in Pierre.
