The Pierre Governor football team had to wait an extra day, but it was worth the wait, as Pierre dominated Sturgis to a 42-6 win Saturday evening at Hollister Field in Pierre.
The Governors did not find the end zone in the first two possessions with Jerren Deal being intercepted as he was hit as he threw to end the second possession allowing Sturgis to take over at the Governor 28. The Scoopers couldn’t capitalize and missed a 43 yard field goal and Govs made them pay. Porter Hunsley would scamper for a 49 yard touchdown run to give Pierre the lead and Pierre would not be stopped again until the end of the game. Will Danburg had a 67 yard touchdown reception before Thomas Snyder would score on a 21 yard catch and Deal’s 48 yard touchdown run made it 28-6 at the break as the Govs had over 300 yards of offense in the first half.
After failing to score on the opening possession of the second half, Sturgis again couldn’t stop the Govs as Hunsley added his second touchdown on the ground and Carter Schiefelbein started the running clock catching a 35 yard pass from Deal to make it 42-6. The Gov defense, who had 21 different players make a tackle, stopped the Scoopers on all but the one drive as Sutton Sonnenschein had an interception in the first half.
Deal would finish 10-16 through the air for 243 yards with three touchdowns and a pick while leading the rushing at 100 yards on eight carries. A total of eight different receivers made a catch as Schiefelbein had four grabs for 130 yards as the offense picked up 477 yards on the night. Max Dupris led the defense in tackles while Max Schmitz had 1.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss in the win.
Pierre will travel to Yankton Friday night to take on the 1-0 Bucks who stormed past Aberdeen Central on the road 48-11. Coverage begins at 6:30 Friday with kickoff at 7:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
