PIERRE, (KCCR) — While South Dakota has provided items to the national America 250 Time Capsule that was buried in Philadelphia on the Fourth of July, South Dakota is creating it’s own state version and officials are looking for contents. South Dakota’s time capsule is set for burial in Sioux Falls on November 2nd, which is the date in 1889 South Dakota became a state at the U-S-S South Dakota Battleship Memorial. Items recommended for the time capsule include metal, pottery, stone or other durable materials that will ensure the integrity of the items for when the capsule is opened in 2076. A sub-group of the South Dakota 250 Commission will determine which items make the cut for the capsule. Individuals who have items selected will be invited to the burial ceremony. The recommended size for items is the approximate size of a wrist watch or business card. Acceptable items would include things such as lapel pins, expired driver’s licenses, laminated paper or fishing lures. Objects for consideration can be mailed to the South Dakota State Historical Center at 900 Governor’s Drive in Pierre. The deadline for submissions is October 16th.
