(Faulkton, SD) – The Sully Buttes Chargers and Faulkton Area Trojans met for the fifth time in three seasons and this time it was to open the season. The Chargers in their third straight trip up to Faulkton held on for their first win of the season 30-20.
Sully Buttes defense shined in the game. The first half with every possible break going the Trojans way was stopped by the Chargers. Including the first play on offense for Sully Buttes. A high snap over quarterback Easton more would set up Faulkton inside the redzone. However, the Charger defense had a fourth down stance to give the ball back and go down the field.
Sully Buttes would strike first on a four yard touchdown run from Bretton Barber in the late stages of the first quarter. The Chargers scored twice more in the second. A 50 yard screen pass connection from Easton Moore to Barber would make it 14-0. Faulkton would score their first points of the season on a one yard quarterback sneak from Henry Boosly. After a couple drives stalled for both teams nearing the end of the second quarter; Moore would find Bretton Barber on a 36 yard touchdown pass to give the Chargers a 22-6 lead going into the half.
If you know about these two teams, no lead will ever be safe. Faulkton came out in the second half ready to climb. A 68 yard scramble touchdown pass from Boosley to Corbin Stark but the lead to 22-14 after a successful two point try. The third quarter saw the lowest offensive output by the Chargers with just 15 total yards of offense. Sully Buttes only needed 58 total yards in the second half. Faulkton cashed in on a 5 yard touchdown run from Boosley for his second of the night and the lead for Chargers was now 22-20.
The Sully Buttes offense would play the clock management game, but running the clock down while added a score would be a bonus. The Chargers had one sustained drive, that was set up on a 33 yard Easton Moore to Hudson Barber connection to set up Bretton Barber from five yards out for the score. Sully Buttes would convert on the two point try making it 30-20 with little time for Faulkton to come back.
Sully Buttes ended the night unofficially with 259 yards of total offense 213 yards through the air and 46 on the ground. Easton More threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns. Bretton Barber lead the rushing with 68 yards on twelve carries. Hudson Barber would ave five receptions for 122 yards and one touchdown the lead the receivers on the night.
