PIERRE, (KCCR) — The American Heart Association has recognized 24 South Dakota hospitals and three in central South Dakota for improving the care given to patients with heart disease and stroke through the Get With The Guidelines quality improvement program. Making the grade locally are Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre; Sanford Chamberlain Medical Center in Chamberlain and Winner Regional Health in Winner. The 24 South Dakota hospitals are a part of over three-thousand across the country taking part in efforts to make sure care is in line with the most up-to-date and research-based treatment guidelines. Participation in the program has been connected to better patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality. The program has also reduced disparities in care to several populations. According to the 2026 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Report, those events are the first and fourth leading causes of death in the county, respectively. In the program, hospitals use real‑time data, clinical best practices and performance feedback to improve adherence to evidence‑based care for conditions such as stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, cardiac arrest and coronary artery disease.
