The first soccer game is officially here. The Pierre Governors will be hosting the Jefferson Cavaliers in a boys and girls doubleheader at the PILC fields both looking for opening game wins.
For the Governor boys, who will play its game first, they finished the season at 6-5-4 falling in the first round of the Class AA state tournament. They open up with the state runner-up in Jefferson so the difficulty of the schedule is already at the top to start the year. Jefferson has state championship aspirations after finishing in second place last year with graduating just four. The Cavaliers outscored its opponents 54-23 finishing at 13-2-2 losing 6-0 to Lincoln in the state title game. These two teams did not meet last season. Caiden Ahartz and Jacoby LaRoche are the two big returners for the offense for the Govs.
The Governor girls will look to start off on the right foot after making the state semifinals last season falling to Harrisburg. Pierre returns Lexi Hillmer who led the team with 15 goals while bringing back plenty of defensive help and goalie Emlyn Swanson who had four shutouts in the 13 wins. Jefferson finished at 3-10-1 being the 16th seed. The Cavaliers also graduate eight seniors from last year’s team. Pierre beat Jefferson 5-2 back in the 2023 playoffs, the last time these two teams met.
The Governor boys will be the first game of the day with a 4:00 kickoff with the girls game to follow at 6:00 all at the PILC Fields in Pierre. Pierre will also host Watertown on Thursday.
