The Pierre Governor football theme last year was the Empire Strikes Back. The Empire struck back, claimed the 11AA state title and now they begin the quest to repeat with the annual downstream days.
The Governors started the year on Monday with a quick couple of hours at the Riggs practice field before heading to Oahe Downstream continuing with workouts and a chance to bond as a team as they’ve continued the tradition. The first couple of days have very little X’s and O’s, but it becomes one of the best memories for players and for coaches. Pierre finished the 2025 campaign at 9-3 winning the state championship over Yankton. While several seniors graduated, a bulk of experience returns for the Governors including quarterback Jerren Deal who enters his junior season. Deal moved to the quarterback spot after an injury to one of the seniors who graduated in Kaleb Lounsberry and exploded in his first game at the quarterback spot. Deal now goes into his first downstream as the starting quarterback and he says he’s working to continue to get better…
