As the high school football season is beginning with practices, a date on the calendar this year will be celebrating a 40th anniversary of a state title as the Stanley County Buffaloes will honor the 1986 state title winning team.
In the second to final home game and second to final game of the regular season, October 9, Stanley County will host Platte-Geddes and honor the state championship winning team. In 1986, Stanley County would defeat Tripp/Delmont in the 9A state title game with a 28-6 score for the Buffs only state championship. Since 1986, the Buffs have been back to the state title game four more times, but have come up short each year. During the 1986 season, Stanley County went undefeated, the first undefeated regular season in school history and did so only allowing 23 points in the regular season. The Buffs beat Sully Buttes and White River-Wood before shutting out Kadoka, Jones County, McLaughlin, Bennett County, Philip and Lyman. Stanley County beat Lyman again before going through Faith and winning on a frozen field at Herried/Pollock to reach the state championship. In the state championship, a scoreless game at halftime thanks to a goal line stand from the Buffs and Stanley County turned to Raymond Tibbs up the middle and he pounded his way to help the Buffs win the state title. Tibbs and quarterback Jay Nelson were named to the 9A All-State team with Dave Tate winning the state title as head coach.
The night will feature a Buff Nation Tailgate and the 1986 team will be recognized in the night. Stanley County opens the football season on August 21 at Bon Homme.
