PIERRE, (KCCR) — Even as rain falls across South Dakota it’s showing an impact in reducing drought. More expansion of drought, especially across central South Dakota is being noted in this week’s update of the U-S Drought Monitor for the state. An area of moderate drought across Dewey, Potter and northern Sully and Stanley Counties have been elevated to serious drought. Serious drought increased in Dewey County 81-percent in the last week. Potter County is up to 99-and-a-half percent serious drought and Sully County is up 13-percent to 90-percent. Haakon County saw moderate grow from zero to 99-point-seven percent in the last week. In Jackson County, the increase is 47-percent. Moderate drought grew in Stanley County by 24-percent to 41-percent with severe drought making up nearly 10-percent near the Cheyenne River. An area of no drought, southeast of Pierre has shrunk. Last week, Jones County was 49-percent drought free. This week, it’s one-point-five percent drought free with abnormally dry area growing to 98-percent of the county.
