PIERRE, (KCCR) — Details have been announced for the unveiling of the newest addition to the Trail of Governors in Pierre. The unveiling was set for the Friday before Flag Day, as unveiling events typically have been, but former Governor Kristi Noem was unavailable to attend due to obligations as Special Envoy to the Shield of the Americas. Noem’s statue will be revealed on Friday August 7th near the statue’s permanent home on the south end of Hilger’s Gutch. The event is normally held in the State Capitol Rotunda, but the Rotunda is unavailable due to restoration work. The ceremony will be held at 10 am at the corner of South Dakota Boulevard and East Church Street. Representative-elect Laurie Gill will host the unveiling of both the statue and Noem’s official portrait that will be hung in the State Capitol. Trail of Governors Foundation President Rick Jensen will speak along with Governor Larry Rhoden, Lieutenant Governor and Foundation board member Tony Venhuizen, Noem statue sculptor John Lopez, portrait artist David Uhl and Pierre mayor Todd Johnson. Noem herself is not mentioned as a speaker for the event.
