FORT PIERRE, (KCCR) — Just days after fire restrictions were put in place by the Bureau of Land Management for land they oversee in Stanley, Haakon and Ziebach Counties, the United States Department of Agriculture has implemented Stage One fire restrictions with the Nebraska National Forests and Grasslands. The restriction is a forest-wide fire ban due to drought conditions that includes the Fort Pierre National Grasslands. The restrictions are in effect from July 18th to December 31st at midnight or until conditions improve. Stage One fire restrictions include no open campfires or charcoal cooking use outside of U-S Forest Service-provided metal fire rings in established campgrounds and no outdoor smoking in areas not cleared of all flammable material and vegetation within a three-foot diameter. Smoking is allowed in developed recreation areas. Propane or other liquid fuel stoves are permitted inside cleared three-foot diameter areas. Motorists are encouraged to make sure trailer chains have proper road clearance and to use caution when parking near dry vegetation. Those with questions can contact the Fort Pierre Ranger District at 605-224-5517.
