PIERRE, (KCCR) — Despite no rain and high temperatures drought is marginally improving this week across the state. That doesn’t mean it’s increase everywhere. Areas of no drought this week expanded four-percent to 17-percent, while abnormally dry areas fell four-percent to 82-percent. Moderate, severe and extreme drought changed less than one-percent. In central South Dakota drought is growing, especially in the north. An area of moderate drought that started in Dewey County has expanded down into Sully and northern Stanley Counties. In fact, moderate drought increased 17-percent in northern Stanley County while 73-percent is abnormally dry and 27-percent of southern Stanley County is drought-free. Moderate drought is up 58-percent in Sully County and 26-percent in Potter County where moderate is now 99-percent of that county. A small area of severe drought has develop Agar and Le Plant in Sully, Potter and Dewey Counties. Severe drought makes up 17-percent of Potter; two-percent of Sully and three-and-a-half percent of Dewey County.
