The Pierre Little League had to wait nearly all hours of the night to play its first game of the state tournament on Wednesday and the game went into Thursday in Central Time as Sioux Falls would defeat Capital City 8-1 in Rapid City.
The first game of the day was put into a lightning delay for a couple of hours which pushed back the start of Sioux Falls and Harney, which was already postponed from Tuesday to Wednesday. Sioux Falls would eventually win 10-0 to advance to face Pierre. However, the two teams had to wait for Brandon Valley and Oglala to play their game which started around 9:00 Central Time. Brandon Valley would defeat Oglala also by the score of 10-0. Then, just before 11:00 Central Time, Pierre would have first pitch against Sioux Falls for a spot in the winner’s bracket championship on Friday. Joshua Hegge would lead off the bottom of the first with a single and would get to third on an error before Pierre would have the bases loaded and one out. A wild pitch would score Hegge and Pierre would lead 1-0 but were unable to capitalize for more in the inning. And could not get more across as the game progressed. Sioux Falls would tie the game in the top of the second and then strike for three runs in the third to lead 4-1. Another run in the fourth and three in the fifth gave Sioux Falls the 8-1 advantage in the win. Pierre had just two hits with Bridger Johnson having the other hit. Hudson Hackett would start on the mound and go the first two innings allowing three runs on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Hegge would throw the next inning giving up an unearned run on two hits. Jett Stroup would also throw an inning and a third giving up four runs but one earned on five hits with a walk. Beckett Allen would throw the following inning and a third giving up just one hit, one walk and striking out one. Bodie Hand would get the final out in the lone batter he faced. The game ended around 12:30 Central Time, 11:30 Mountain Time.
Pierre’s tournament isn’t over yet. They will take on Canyon Lake in the first game tonight slated for 6:00 Central Time. The Little Leaguers will have to win today, Friday, Saturday and two on Sunday to get the state title, but it starts with a bounce back game tonight. Oglala will face Harney in the other elimination game.
