PIERRE, (KCCR) — The Out-of-School-Time program in Philip has been awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant from the South Dakota Department of Education. The Philip Elementary School Promoting Achievement and Wonder with Scotties or PAWS program is receiving 983-thousand 198 dollars out of over nine-million dollars to be split by similar programs across the state. The Philip PAWS program is supported by the Black Hills Special Services Cooperative. Twenty-first Century Community Learning Center grants provide resources for programs that establish and expand activities in the the community that focus on improving academic achievement and providing meaningful family engagement opportunities outside of a regular school day. The grants provide funds from 50 to 300-thousand dollars per year over a four-year period for eligible organizations, which include school districts, community-based organizations, non-profits, for-profits, local governments, higher education institutes, public or private organizations, tribal schools and religious organizations.
