Both the Renner Royals and Pierre Post 8 trailed late in game one and two and the team came from behind to get wins as Renner won 5-4 in game one and Pierre won game two 7-4 splitting the doubleheader at home on Monday at Hyde Stadium.
In game one, Pierre would get an RBI single in the bottom of the first from Sutton Sonnenschein to lead 1-0 through four innings. After Renner tied the game in the fifth, Pierre responded with an RBI single from Hudson Stoeser and from Sonnenschein to make it 3-1 after five. Renner again tied the game in the sixth, but Ryker Edson responded getting a one out triple to give the Eights a 4-3 advantage. However, in the top of the seventh a lead off error would help the Royals get the tying run to score on a wild pitch and an RBI ground out from pinch hitter Eddie McQuistan gave the Royals a 5-4 advantage and the Eights would go down in order in the seventh falling in game one. Carter Templeton would go the first five innings allowing three runs, two earned on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts as Porter Hunsley would be the one to suffer the loss on the mound giving up two unearned runs without a hit with two walks and a two strikeouts in an inning of relief. Carter Schiefelbein had two doubles in the loss.
In game two, Pierre would take a 3-0 lead this time in the first off a two RBI single from Will Eilers and an RBI single from Edson. The score again held until the fifth when Renner this time took the lead with a two RBI single from Sam Donohoe and then Joey Liable giving the Royals the lead. Pierre, though, would hold Renner off the board the remaining of the game and score the final four runs as Sonnenschen collected his third RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 4-4 before Eilers would drive in his third RBI of the game to give the Eights the 5-4 lead. Schiefelbein would get a two out, two RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth to give the Eights the insurance runs they needed to get the win. Bridger Babcock would go the first four innings allowing three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and Edson would get the win on the mound going the final three innings giving up just one run on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Pierre moves to 9-13 and 8-9 in South Dakota play. Renner goes to 10-6 in South Dakota games. The Eights will face the Aberdeen Smittys at home on Wednesday with a doubleheader slated for 3:00 and coverage beginning at 2:45 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
