As the Pierre Governor baseball team preps for the state tournament to begin on Friday and the All-Region teams have been released, three members of the Governors place on the All-State team, Carter Schiefelbein on the first team and Carter Templeton and Sutton Sonnenschein on the second team.
Schiefelbein would lead the Governors in average at now .484 heading into the quarterfinals as he has seven doubles and five triples along with driving in 16 runs. He leads the team in steals with now 28 and scored 33 runs as the shortstop for the Governors and lead off man game in and game out. The junior is one of two shortstops to make the first team All-State.
Templeton, a sophomore, now leads the team in innings pitched at 46 and is 5-1 on the season with seven starts and nine appearances overall. He threw a complete game one hit shutout against Sturgis and had an incredible 1.83 ERA, .164 batting average against and WHIP under one at 0.94 which means he allows less than one guy on base per inning. He has 50 strikeouts and was the starter in game one of the super regional round going the distance in a 3-1 win for the Govs.
Sonnenschein led the team in RBIs driving in 29 during the regular season. He would hit .365 with three doubles and three triples. One of Sonnenschein’s biggest reasons for success is that he hit .400 with runners in scoring position which was third best on the team with those having over 10 at bats for the entire season. Defensively Sonnenschein caught in 167 innings and has thrown out 14 trying to steal for a 33% caught stealing percentage.
