It will be a lot of windshield time for the Pierre Governor baseball team this weekend as the Govs will now head to Sioux Falls on Saturday to face Roosevelt before driving across the state to face Sturgis on Sunday.
It was originally supposed to be a home doubleheader against Roosevelt on Saturday, but with the Howard Wood Dakota Relays and a lot of dual sport athletes, Pierre agreed to move the games to Sioux Falls to allow the kids to not have to choose where they wanted to compete. Instead, both the track and field and baseball teams can be at full strength for the biggest track event of the season, and when the baseball team needs to make sure they continue to win games to stay and climb in the standings. Roosevelt comes in at 4-9 in South Dakota games after its win over Harrisburg on Thursday.
The Pierre, Sturgis matchup is 8-9 in the standings and would be a first round best-of-three matchup if the season ended today. Pierre, who is on a 14 game winning streak heading into the weekend will face the Scoopers who are 5-3 in South Dakota games after falling to the Stevens Raiders on Thursday. Pierre can match and break the longest winning streak in team history which is 15 10 years ago. Pierre matched the 2023 state championship team with its 14th win in a row last Saturday.
Coverage of all four games will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call. Coverage begins at 4:45 on Saturday at Harmadon Park with Sunday’s games starting with coverage at 1:45 Central Time.
