PIERRE, (KCCR) — Three central South Dakota counties will be home in the month of May to random sobriety checkpoints conducted by the South Dakota Highway Patrol and local law enforcement. Stanley, Brule and Jackson are among the 21 counties where the checkpoints will take place. The other counties include Butte, Codington, Davison, Edmunds, Hamlin, Hanson, Jerauld, Lawrence, Meade, Minnehaha, Moody, Lake, Pennington, Roberts, Sanborn, Spink and Yankton. The checkpoints are aimed at lowering impaired driving and increasing safety on South Dakota roads. Sobriety checkpoints are paid for by the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety. Drivers are reminded to drive responsibly and avoid drinking and driving whether checkpoints are planned near them or not. Drivers intent on drinking should have a designated driver or use public or commercial transportation.
