The Pierre Governor baseball team has tied the 2023 state championship team with a 14 game winning streak as the Govs beat Rapid City Central on Saturday 5-0 and 12-1 in a doubleheader sweep.
In game one, Sutton Sonnenschein would get an RBI ground out in the bottom of the first to give the Govs the lead and it would be all that Carter Templeton would need as he would throw a complete game, one hit shutout. Templeton allowed just three walks and a hit batter and the only hit for the Cobblers was a lead off double, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. He was just three batters over the minimum in seven innings. Will Danburg had the only other RBI in the 5-0 win with a single in the bottom of the sixth.
In game two, Pierre would get a six inning win with a six run sixth inning to finish off the doubleheader sweep as Pierre opened up the game with a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first and added on a run in the third and two in the fourth as Sonnenschein had a game high four RBIs while Carter Schiefelbein had a three RBI triple to end the game in the sixth inning to give Pierre the 11 run win. Sonnenschein had four hits, Porter Hunsley had three hits and Parker O’Bryan had a double also with an RBI. Jonathan Nueharth had the sixth straight complete game performance by a Governor pitcher as he had one unearned run on three hits with two walks on 72 pitches.
Pierre is one win away from tying the Governor team record of a 15 game winning streak. At now 16-4, Pierre will travel to Sioux Falls to face Roosevelt on Saturday, which was originally scheduled to be at home, but has been switched to help track and field athletes compete in both the Howard Wood Dakota Relays and play baseball. Then Pierre will travel to Sturgis on Sunday. Coverage of all four games will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
