LYMAN COUNTY, (KCCR) — Construction will begin Tuesday on a 15-mile section of Interstate 90 in Lyman County between Kennebec and Reliance. The South Dakota Department of Transportation and project contractor have worked together to shorten the construction period to 14 weeks. All traffic will shift to the westbound lanes in a head-to-head configuration. Several closures will be required for eastbound traffic including Exit 241 at Kennebec and Exit 248 at Reliance. Access to Reliance will be detoured to Exit 251 using South Dakota Highway 47. Overwidth traffic going west will enter the two-way traffic section and exit at Exit 251. Overwidth eastbound traffic will exit at Exit 235 at Kennebec and follow detour signs to Exit 251. The eastern portion of the project will still require some lane closures in certain areas instead of a full traffic shift. The work will include the milling of shoulders and resurfacing to improve safety and durability. Asphalt will be applied to help protect the road surface from moisture and extend its life. A 12-foot width restriction will be in place. Work should be finished by the end of July.
