PIERRE, (KCCR) — An Eagle Butte man will avoid federal prison time after being sentenced in federal court for threatening a federal official. U-S Attorney Ron Parsons says 68 year-old Joseph Lafferty was found guilty of Threatening a Federal Official during a jury trial in January of this year. Evidence presented during that trial showed Lafferty threatened to get his gun and kill a federal official employed by the Indian Health Service on July 21st of 2025. Lafferty made the threat in Eagle Butte on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation. Lafferty was indicted by a federal grand jury in August of 2025. Lafferty was sentenced to four years of probation and ordered to pay a 100-dollar special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
