PIERRE, (KCCR) — Two South Dakota Highway Patrol Troopers are two of four recognized by the South Dakota Police Chief’s and South Dakota Sheriff’s Associations Medal of Honor awards. Badlands Squad Troopers Kyle Knievel and Raymond Peters were among the law enforcement officers who responded to a high-speed chase through Haakon County last August. Peters is being honored for keeping the pursuit going even as suspect Shace Looking Horse shot at Peters, putting bullet hole through Peters’ windshield. Knievel put himself in harm’s way in the dark to shoot Looking Horse, who had taken a woman hostage during the situation. Knievel’s shot killed Looking Horse, ending the incident. Two other Troopers Sergeant Cody Jansen and Eric Peterson also received the Medal of Honor. They were honored for their work during an incident near Beresford last April. Knievel was a finalist earlier this year for his actions in Haakon County last August for the International Association of Chiefs of Police Trooper of the Year award. That award was presented to a Trooper from Virginia.
