PIERRE, (KCCR) — An Eagle Butte man has been sentenced to federal prison time for possessing stolen ammunition. U-S Attorney Ron Parsons says U-S District Judge Eric Schulte sentenced 26 year-old Nathanal Benoist to 14 month in federal custody on March 31st. Benoist will be on three years of supervised release, or probation, after the prison term. Parsons says Benoist also must give up a firearm and ammunition along with a 100-dollar assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Parsons says Benoist broke into a closed store in Eagle Butte on November 1st of 2024. Benoist shot out the front window of the store and entered the store through the broken window where he stole the ammunition. Benoist was indicted by a federal grand jury in March of 2025 and entered his guilty plea on July 28th of 2025. The case was a part of Project Safe Neighborhood, which is a violent crime reduction effort that began in 2021. Benoist was taken into the custody of the U-S Marshals Service to begin his sentence.
