The Pierre Governor baseball team would play in cold conditions but the bats were hot, although the Govs would drop both games to the Mitchell Kernels 13-11 and 7-3 Monday on the road.
A total of 21 hits with six going for extra bases in two games usually leads to at least a split, but the Kernels were just as good hitting the ball as the Govs in picking up the two wins to start Mitchell’s season. In game one, Pierre did not trail until the bottom of the fifth even though Mitchell failed to score in only the bottom of the sixth. Pierre led 3-0 after the top of the first and led 5-1 after the top of the second and still led 6-4 after the top of the fourth. At 6-6 going into the top of the fifth Jerren Deal would hit a two run homer, the first of his high school career and the Govs took an 8-6 lead. But a seven run fifth inning gave Mitchell the 13-8 lead and while Pierre scored three in the seventh, it wasn’t enough to come back in the game to get the first game win. A combined 24 runs on 28 hits. Sutton Sonnenschein had a double and two triples to drive in a team high three runs while Carter Schiefelbein had four hits including a double along with three hits from Porter Hunsley and Tripp Lindekugel getting a double in his first varsity at bat. Ian Weber had two doubles and drove in two runs while Lincoln Bottum had three RBIs as Mitchell had five doubles in the game. Will Danburg gave up three runs on three hits and three walks in an inning and a third while Ryker Edson would take the loss on the mound giving up eight runs on seven hits with four walks in three innings of work. Carter Templeton threw the final inning and a third giving up two runs on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Quinton Wilson got the win for Mitchell going an inning and a third giving up three runs on four hits and two strikeouts as Mitchell used four pitchers in game one.
In game two, both Brennen McCullough for Pierre and Jacob Ebert of Mitchell settled down the bats, but yet seven of the 11 Mitchell hits in the game went for extra bases as a total of 12 hits in two games were for extra bases for the Kernels. Pierre had six hits in the loss as Schiefelbein had two as he grabbed six hits in the two games. Sonnenschein drove in another two runs as the two had the three RBIs in the game as Pierre came back from down 3-0 in the top of the third. Brennen Penne had an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth and two runs would score on an error to make it 6-3 and then an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth sealed the win for Mitchell as Weber again went 3-3 with another two doubles as he went 5-5 with four doubles and was never retired for Mitchell. Penne got the save in the final two innings of work without allowing a hit or run. McCullough would go for the complete game allowing seven runs, two unearned on 11 hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Pierre falls to 2-4 on the season and will travel to Sioux Falls for the border battle where they will play Lincoln and O’Gorman along with two North Dakota teams over Friday and Saturday.
