PIERRE, (KCCR) — It turns out there WILL be a primary election for the Hughes County Commission. Thursday the South Dakota Secretary of State’s candidate list website posted a four candidate for the Commission election June 2nd. Pat Steber of Pierre filed his petitions on the final day a candidate could on March 31st. Steber will challenge incumbents Rob Fines, Connie Hohn and Bill Abernathy, seeking to take over one of those seats. The District 26 House races are getting more competitive. In 26-A Republican Ron Fredrick turned in petitions to challenge incumbent Eric Emery, a Democrat in November. The other seat in the single-seat split district will see both a primary and general election race. Democrat Lewis Grassrope turned in petitions. Provided there are no further Democrats to challenge him in the primary, Grassrope will face the winner of the Republican primary between Angi Hanzlik and Will Mahnke. A Democrat has entered the District 27 Senate race. Celestine Stadnick will face Republican Anthony Kathol in November barring any future Democratic challengers.
