PIERRE, (KCCR) — Rain and snow in the forecast for this week may slow the continual expansion of drought across South Dakota. Areas of severe drought are now cropping up in parts of central South Dakota. Tripp County went from zero to 81-percent severe drought in one week. Severe drought is new to Brule County this week, increasing from zero to 65-percent in roughly the southern two-thirds of the county. Severe drought has also moved into the Lyman County boot heal and is now at 12-point-nine percent. Moderate drought in Lyman County sets at 68-percent. Statewide, the largest change this week is an increase in severe drought from 15-percent to nearly 22-percent. Other drought categories are unchanged including drought-free at 37-percent; abnormally dry at 62-percent and severe drought at just under three-percent of the state. The areas of severe drought are in the southwest in central Custer and northern Fall River Counties and in the southeast along the Missouri River in Charles Mix, Bon Homme, Yankton and Clay Counties.
