After one of the best seasons in Pierre Governor Track and Field last year, the Governor boys and girls are ready to get this season underway with a trip to Brookings on Saturday.
It seemed like every single meet, the Governors were breaking another school record, and then breaking their own record to reset the school mark, and that’s because it was almost every single meet. The Governors had numerous state finishers from last year which include plenty coming back for this year’s team on both the girls and boys teams. The Governor boys placed seventh and the girls finished in fifth place at the state competition at the end of May. The girls are returning Charlee Williams-Smith, Emlyn Swanson, Emery Larson, Brooke Hansen, Gwen Richter, Josephine Wurtz and Devyn Van Roekel who placed inside the top ten at the state meet. Misty Larson, head coach of the Governor girls team says while it’s fun to look back at last and the records which were set, she says they’re focused on this year…
Larson says while you certainly want to have good results on Saturday, it’s the start of the process for the season and the girls will continue to build as the season goes along…
Larson says she loves having an indoor meet to start the season…
On the boys side of things, Josh Schleusner continues as the boys head coach and he says you can see the momentum has carried over from the end of the season last May to day one…
Guys like Karson Walti, Carter Scheifelbein, Caleb Morris, Lincoln Dilges, George Rapp, Carter Merrill and Corde Austin all return after placing inside the top 10 at the state meet in both track and field events. But the process is just beginning to get to the state meet and having your best event at the end of the year. Schleusner says they share guys with baseball and there will be plenty of opportunities this weekend for other guys to step up with it being a baseball weekend…
Schleusner says it’s big to get this first meet in an indoor facility…
The Governors will be in Brookings on Saturday at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.
