The Pierre Governor tennis team has the distinguish once again to get the spring sports season underway as the Govs will head to Rapid City to compete at the West River Invite starting Thursday and running through Friday.
Pierre will return all but two from last year’s varsity squad with just Jacob Leiferman graduating and William Southern moving. The Govs bring back both Hights, Lucas and Levi with Lucas being the lone senior on the team. Marty Blanchette, Jacoby LaRoche and Brady Lowery return as juniors and Levi Hight and Noah Lueking return as sophomores. Lueking is the winner of the consolation championship in flight three while also getting third place in doubles flight two. Lowery and LaRoche won fifth place in doubles flight three. The Governors will open the season with a two day event at the West River Invite. A total of 10 teams will compete over the weekend with five from East River and five from West River. Thursday, the Govs will face Rapid City Christian and St. Thomas More in the first duals of the season. On Friday, the Govs will face Stevens and Rapid City Central to close out its weekend. Spearfish is the other West River team at the invite but will not face them this weekend, but will take them on in a couple of weeks. The Governors first match is scheduled for 4:00 Central time Thursday and then beginning the day at 10:00 Central Time on Friday all at the Sioux Park tennis courts.
